In low- and middle-income countries, millions of youth (aged 15-35) are unemployed or underemployed. Many pursue alternative livelihood strategies, such as (informal) migration, or face the risk of becoming involved in crime or extremism. Through our Employment and Training programme, we help young people secure decent work or launch their own business (contributing to SDG 8: decent work and economic).

Job & Business Booster approach

Around the world we see the same phenomenon. In many parts of the world, education is expected to provide access to employment. Yet in reality even graduates often struggle to find jobs. Our Job & Business Booster turns this vision around: instead of starting with education, we start with labour market demand and business opportunities. This systemic approach works across the youth employment ecosystem, engaging local public and private stakeholders to improve labour markets and entrepreneurial climates.

Labour market demand

Job & Business Booster acts as a broker of dignified income—whether through employment or self-employment. We see great potential in green jobs across sectors. Local production reduces the carbon footprint of consumer products and presents opportunities for start-ups. We negotiate (large-scale) employment contracts with companies and select training providers via public tenders to deliver short, targeted trainings. At the same time, we organise follow-up training for employees to promote lifelong learning.

Kickstarting start-ups

For young people with entrepreneurial ambitions, we offer tailored support to launch and grow their businesses. Through our network of coaches, young entrepreneurs receive guidance to strengthen their enterprises and create new job opportunities. One of the greatest barriers to entrepreneurship is access to capital. Job & Business Booster negotiates with financial institutes to help youth secure the funding they need. We believe in the strengths of young people—and we treat them as clients, not beneficiaries. All youth contribute a small fee for the support of Job & Business Booster they receive. This investment signals our confidence in their potential and encourages them to invest in their own future.

21st-century skills

We also equip youth with the skills they need to thrive in today’s changing world. Beyond soft skills or life skills, we teach 21st-century skills: adaptability, resilience, creativity, and the ability to respond to new challenges. These are essential qualities for navigating the modern labour market and building sustainable careers.

Inclusive labour market

Based on our core values, we see all young people as our fellow human beings. We envision labour markets that are inclusive and just—providing access to decent employment for all. We commit to inclusion by setting clear targets for reaching marginalised groups and removing barriers to their participation.
